Weed Watch Program

LSA’s Lake Host Program works to prevent the introduction of non-native species by visiting boats. Our Weed Watchers support this program by monitoring the shoreline to intercept the proliferation of non-native plants that could become problematic and costly to eradicate. As our climate becomes further disrupted and we experience extreme shifts in temperature and rainfall, it’s essential to protect Lake Skatutakee from invasive species, which would degrade water quality and threaten aquatic life.

LSA’s Weed Watch Program is a no-cost, no paperwork early warning system perfect for kayakers, canoers, and sunset pontoon parties. Weed Watchers are resident volunteers who familiarize themselves with native plants so they can monitor a portion of the shoreline about once a month from May to September. Weed Watchers are provided with kits from NH Lakes Association with information about native plants and the exotics we want to avoid. Included is a survey map from 2018 of locations of existing native species. If something unusual is discovered growing, they report it to the Weed Watcher Coordinator Margie Ward at meward44@gmail.com or 827-3883.

We’re looking for volunteers for the 2021 season. So, if you like to paddle around and have always wondered what that pretty purple flower is, contact Margie to sign up.
